Wednesday Wanderings: Two Thrifting Fallacies Debunked!

Thrifting Fallacy #1:  Thrift shopping is fine for browsing but you can forget trying to shop for something specific.  Okay...I used to believe this one.  I would go into Goodwill thinking I'll browse the skirts and shirts or maybe the purses but if I needed a specific item I would usually head to a retail store.  But the more I thrift the more I learn and one big lesson is that you can find anything you need at a thrift store.  Now I'm not saying you can find a blue polka dotted skirt, but I am saying you can find a skirt or two in the colors or styles you are looking for.  For instance, I wanted to take part in my first Everybody, Everywear challenge but the challenge was to wear a maxi dress or skirt and I didn't have one.  So I headed to my local Goodwill looking for a specific item and was thrilled when I found three that would fit the bill.

I ended up wearing the maroon one for Everybody, Everywear's maxi challenge yesterday.
Total Cost of Outfit: $14.  All items thrifted.
While searching for maxi skirts I also ran across two midi skirts.

I wore the top one, a "grandma" looking skirt in two birds inspiration monday challenge this past Monday (rolling the waist to get the right length for the look).
Total Cost of Outfit: $32.  Everything thrifted except for boots.
This all goes to show you that thrift stores and Goodwill are viable choices when you need something specific, you need it quick and you need it cheap!  I have a lot of fun trying these different blog challenges but if I would have had to go out and buy these items retail then I would not have been able to afford to participate.

Thrifting Fallacy #2:  You can't find matching anything when you are shopping in a store full of one of a kind items.  I was very pleased to prove this one untrue.  I found a pair of macrame sandals that will go well with the 70's influences popular this spring.  I trotted those babies over to the purse section and found three macrame purses.  I carried my finds over to the three way mirror and held them each by my side with the sandals on.  One of the purses matched perfectly.
These couldn't have matched better if they had been sold as a set.  I've always loved thrifting, but after starting my blog I am even more committed to the thrifting lifestyle.  It's easy, fun, fashionable, affordable and green...what more could you want?

Clockwise from top left:
All Over Color Stick in Pink Lemonade (smells yummy)
Eyebrow Stencil Kit  (great to use with pencil or powder)
Eyeshadow Brush (use wet or dry, I like to use it wet and spread on a thin layer of shadow)
Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 in Watermelon (a great glossy pink)
Shimmering Facial Whip in Spotlight ( a tiny dab of this gives a great glow)
Brightening Eye Color in Punk Funk (fun colors to go with the colorful spring fashions)

I agree with you ! When I go to the free market, I find what I'm looking for, without knowing that I was looking for these clothes !

Debbie--I totally agree on both points. In fact, I have found that some thrift stores are better than others for certain items. There is one where I always find excellent skirts; another if I am shopping for a white blouse. Sometimes, I have to hit a couple of stores before I find the BEST version of what I'm looking for. Your maxi look turned out great.

On point two, about matching items, I've had the experience of find a blazer in one section that perfect matches a skirt found in another section of the store.
