March 25 Fashion Beauty Friend Friday on Feminism

This week's Friend Beauty Friend Friday questions are about feminism.  If you would like to get in on the weekly discussions join FFBF at Modly Chic

 1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a
love for fashion?  I believe you could only see an incompatibility between feminism and fashion if you believe in a male model of feminism where masculine characteristics such as power and career success are seen as more valuable than traditionally female characteristics.  I believe in a feminism where women have the same opportunities as men and female traits are seen as just as desirable as male traits.  A woman should not be seen as less if she family oriented as opposed to career oriented.   If we women are so great, and I think we ARE, then why don't we value ourselves as we are instead of trying to fit ourselves into a male model of the world?  My wish is for the world to value women instead of the world telling us how we have to be to have value.  In the past, women had to stay home and out of the workplace.  Now, we're told we have to have a career.  I say, we should decide which way we want to go with our lives and either choice should be valued.  Loving fashion is a traditionally female trait and in my perfect world, these female traits would be valued just as highly as traditionally male traits.
 2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you
incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog? I've found that I can write about any topic by slanting it towards fashion.  For example, I can write on having balance in my life, feminism as in today's post, my favorite books or insights I have about my life.  People enjoy learning more about you than just what you wear every day.  I know I enjoy learning about my fellow bloggers.

3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession,
how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?  I believe our clothes would adorn our spirits as well as our bodies because who knows a woman's heart better than another woman.  I would expect to see more experimentation, more "fashion" since women are interested in more than simply looking sexy.  I would expect more comfort because we know what feels good to us and our bodies.  I sound sexist!
4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by
your beliefs?  I feel good about myself on the inside because I realize that no matter how old you get, you can still feel the same inside. I also see beauty in women of all ages and sizes so this helps me to see myself in a good light because I am overweight and I am over 50.

5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?   I think they communicate the truth that is inside of each of us.  We see ourselves in a certain way, and this inside "self" seems more the real person to me.  My natural hair color has darkened to a colorless ash brown but inside I'm a blonde so by coloring my hair I am bringing myself closer to who I am on the inside.
I've enjoyed being a part of this discussion and I look forward to seeing how others answer these same questions.  What do you think?

What wise words. I especially enjoyed your response to question 1.

"I believe you could only see an incompatibility between feminism and fashion if you believe in a male model of feminism where masculine characteristics such as power and career success are seen as more valuable than traditionally female characteristics."

Well said!

I totally agree with you on alot of your points. I think we all try to express who we are through our apparence whether it's through clothes, make up or out hair. It's a part of who we are.

Fellow FBFFer here. Great answers! I completely agree with your answer to #1. There are a lot of feminists that look down at women who decide to stay at home, but if they truly want women to have equal rights, then that should include a woman's right to choose being a stay-at-home wife or mother.
