The Blogger Incident of May

The Blogger Incident of May has got me wondering about some things and I thought I would share my concerns here and hopefully get some answers.

First off, how does everyone back up their posts?  I write my posts right here on the blog and I haven't started backing them up yet.  So, my next project is to start saving copies of my post.  I just subscribed to my own blog through one of my email accounts.  I figured that was one of the simplest ways to save my posts.  Of course, I can also save to my computer but since I had a computer crash and I lost all my documents that doesn't really seem that reliable.  I could save to a jump drive but knowing me I would misplace it.  So email seems like a good bet, but I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Secondly, during the blackout, I kept hearing talk of accounts being accidentally permanently deleted.  So, I'm wondering what can a person do about that?  Do you just take all of your backed up posts and start over?  You could copy and paste the posts, but all the links would have to be added back in by hand, wouldn't they?  This sounds like a very time consuming task.

Of course, maybe it's just like lightening striking.  There's so many blogs that don't ever have any problems so maybe the few that do are as rare as getting struck by lightening.  But woe to the one who is struck!

Thirdly, I heard a lot of talk about Wordpress going around while we were all offline, but all I know is Blogger.  And I really like the ease and format of blogger.  I like how my blog looks. It's easy to craft and post and change up the look of my blog.  I've got statistics and ways to let people subscribe and interesting things I can add to my site.  The only thing I don't like is the fact that if my blog disappeared I might not be able to get it back.  And that's a lot of work and time spent to lose.  Blogger, if you're reading this...I love you and hope you love me ...forever with no deletions!

I wanted to get this out there and find out what others are doing to protect their blogs, what with the dangers of others stealing content and blogs being accidentally deleted.  What's a blogger to do?  What do you do?

I spent some time today at a book store and they had books on wordpress. I'm not sure which way to go. I also saw a book "blogging for dummies" I think I'll buy it.

Tammy, Those dummies series are usually pretty good.

Joandy, Thanks for the tip.

In Blogger, go to the Settings tab. At the top of the "Basic" screen, you'll see a link called "Export Blog." Click that and it will give you a "Save" box. Choose a location on your computer, then it will save an XML file which you could import back into Blogger if needed.

Coincidentally, I had done an export the night before Blogger blew up. Luckily though, I didn't even need it. All I lost was a few comments.

Hope this helps set your mind at ease!! :)
