Inspiration Monday: Sparkles and Denim

It's inspiration monday time at two birds.  This week's inspiration is Brooklyn Decker in a shirt and skirt combo.  It's a simple pairing so we've got a lot of room for creativity.

Brooklyn has on a chambray shirt, cute silver sparkly skirt, wide black belt and round toe ankle banded pumps.  What she doesn't have on is any jewelry or accessories.  Time to check out my closet for possible looks.

I like this simple uncluttered look.  What do you think?

What I'm Wearing:

Denim shirt, $20, Target
Yellow, white and silver skirt, $24, Fashion Bug
Silver belt, $1.50, Goodwill
Silver "Judy Jetson" shoes, $10, Show Show

Total cost of outfit:  $55.50

Inspiration Monday: Big Orange Purse

Inspiration Monday over at two two birds is always lots of fun. Sometimes it requires shopping (not a problem!) but this week...look out Emma Stone because I already have a Big Orange Purse!  Here is Emma in our inspiration outfit.  Keep walking, Emma...you can't catch me!

I really like Emma's bag but I bought mine for only three dollars at Goodwill!

A bright orange purse calls for bright orange lipstick and today I wore the brightest of brights!

This shade is Orange Flip by Revlon.  I didn't have any luck finding out the date this color was introduced. One commenter, on a site I visited, thought it might possibly have been one of the original colors of Revlon.  Does anyone know how long orange flip has been around?  It's definitely a vintage shade.

What I'm wearing today:
Floral Dress, $2, local rummage store
Charcoal 3/4 sleeve jacket, $7, Fashion Bug
Platforms, $3, Goodwill
Joan Rivers big orange purse, $3, Goodwill

Total for today:  $15

"Yes, I Have on a Tie, but Look at my Girly Accessories!"

So far, the sisters at two birds have sent me thrifting for bow tie blouses, miss matched prints and floral to get dressed up for inspiration monday. But this week it didn't cost me anything.  All I had to do was raid my husband's closet!  Our inspiration today is a menswear look by AnnaLynne McCord:

I decided to girl up the menswear look with retro red lipstick, a pencil skirt and a vintage wicker purse.

My tie is somewhat casually knotted...most likely due to the fact that I do not know how to knot a tie correctly.  But we'll just call it casual cool.

I occasionally entertain visions of opening an Etsy store but it would be pretty hard to part with the goods.

I bought these at one of those stores where everything is one dollar.  Some of these Only $1 stores are treasure troves of costume jewelry.

These are my ruby slippers.  I could click them together three times and I'd be at home.  But I'm already at home so it would be pointless...

If you've stayed with me this far, I'd like to tell you that I am hopefully going to be featured in a contest at Fabulous 4 $50 & under.   To enter the contest you had to create an outfit for less than $50.  The contest ended yesterday and the top five outfits (vote for me!) will be posted on Fabulous for $50 & under (Thrifty Girl Vintage) around Tuesday, May 24th, and you can go there and vote for your favorite look (mine, mine, mine!).  (Disclaimer:  The previous sentence contained subliminal suggestions.)  Of course, if mine is not chosen as one of the top five, please disregard the previous paragraph <embarrassed face>.

What I'm Wearing:
White shirt, $2.50, Goodwill
Gray skirt, $12, Burke's Outlet
Red tie, borrowed from husband's closet
Vintage white wicker purse, $2, local rummage store
Two brown bracelets, $2, local only $1 store
Red shoes, $10, Shoe Show

Total Cost of Outfit:  $28.50

Inspiration Monday: Wearing Hats with Drew

Every Monday you can find me hanging out with Megan and Nora at their inspiration monday challenge.  This week our assignment was to style a look similar to the lovely Drew Barrymore's as seen in this week's inspiration picture.
I don't have a gray striped shirt, so I decided to work in the gray with my jeans.  I added a  black and white stripe top and and then I played around with my hats.

I wound a scarf around the hat for a hatband.  Now for the rest of my hats:

I kind of like this one with the beret.
This was my bucket hat version.

Here I'm using the scarf as a turban.  Place the middle of a long scarf at the back of your head.  Bring the two ends to the front of your head and cross over twice.  Wind the ends to the back and tuck in.
And finally, no hat!

You can head over to two birds to see everyone's take on this week's look or even join in the fun.  Submissions are open all week.

What I'm Wearing:
Panama straw hat, $3,Family Dollar
Black/white stripe tee, $2.50, Goodwill
Black/white stripe scarf, $7, Burke's Outlet
Olive military vest, $24, rue21
Faded Glory gray bootcut jeans, $12, Walmart
Steve Madden slides, $4,Local thrift store

Total Cost of Outfit:  $52.50

Other Hat Prices:
Bucket hat, $10, Target
Black beret, $10, Burlington Coat Factory

Inspiration Monday: Nicole Richie

I love having Megan and Nora dress me every Monday.  This week's inspiration photo at two birds is Nicole Richie as her bohemian loving self.

I didn't have a sweet floral print romper or dress in my closet, so I did what any woman would do in similar circumstances.  I went shopping...and came home with this:

I found this floral summer dress at a local thrift store for $2.  There is no need to plunk down lots of cash when you're doing a challenge.  Remember, it's supposed to be fun!  I added a denim jacket, a pair of sandals, a handmade bracelet and my $1 sunglasses I bought at one of those everything's $1 stores:

And it all added up to this:

I am trying to love the natural white brightness of my skin!  I even have a little self-tanner left on here.  I would love to be natural and skip the tanners this summer.  It would save time and money.  I haven't decided yet.  So at any moment I could be stocking up on Natural Glow.  What about you?  Do you love tanned skin in the summer or do you go with what nature gave you?

My mother makes jewelry as a hobby.  She made this bracelet for me.

What I'm Wearing:
CATOS floral dress, $2, local thrift store
3/4 sleeve denim jacket, $20, Fashion Bug
Bracelet, made by my mother
Shoes, $5, Family Dollar
Sunglasses, $1, local only $1 store

Total Cost of Outfit:  $28

Inspiration Monday: Copying Katie Holmes

Before I began blogging, I had never tried to copy a celebrity's outfit.  In fact, even though  I religiously tore pages out of magazines, I had never tried to copy those either.  Somehow, I had never connected the dots from admiring a look to achieving that same look for myself.  Now that I blog, I am often found trying to repeat or interpret a look that I've seen.  And thanks to the sisters at two birds, each week I get to try and copy a celebrity look and then see how my fellow bloggers interpret that same look.  I've learned that there is a whole world between looking at something and recreating it.  In fact, action is learning because it is only in the doing that you learn.  This week's prompt was a look from Katie Holmes.

But do I have what I need to create this look? Do I have a gray tee?  Check.  A short sleeved navy cardigan?  Uh.. have a short sleeve navy top that I could unbutton and use as a cardigan.  Oversized dark sunglasses?  Check.  Dark messenger bag?  I've got a brown one that's similar.  Shoes?  I can't really tell much about these so I'll just wear my dark slides.  High waist, self-tie belt, big bell jeans?  Not in my closet, so I guess I'll have to make do.

You can head over to inspiration monday at two birds to find out how to link up each week with your look.
What I'm Wearing:
THAKOON for Target navy shirt worn as cardigan, $2.50, Goodwill
J. CREW Gray knit t-shirt, $2.50, Goodwill
Faded Glory dark wash bootcut jeans, $12, Walmart
Steve Madden slides, $4, Local thrift store
Peacock headband, $10, Target
American Angel bag, $3, Goodwill

Total Cost of Outfit:  $34

Inspiration Monday: Shopping with Kim Kardashian

This is my fourth week of linking up with the sisters at two birds.  Each week they post a photo of a celebrity and it's our job to replicate the look with what we've got in our closets.  It can be a close replica or you can put your own spin on it.  This week is a casual look from Kim Kardashian.  I rounded up similar clothes but unfortunately I can't replicate the body.  Here is this week's inspiration in all of her glory!

And here am I in all of my mine...
Kim...hurry up, it's time to go!
I wonder if two bags will be enough?

How did those darn paparazzi get into the house?!?
Oh well...I might as well pose for a few shots.

I believe this is my good side.

We Kardashians look good from every side.

Where is that Kim?  We need to get going!

We've got lots of shopping to do!

There you are!  It's about time!
